Childbirth Education Certification

I am currently working towards my Childbirth Education Certification.  Hopefully, by the end of 2009 I will be able to teach Childbirth Education to pregnant women and their partners.  I will be awarded the title CCE, certified childbirth educator.

The organization I am studying with is called Childbirth Education Association of Metropolitan New York.   Teachers take 14 classes, read 15 books, attend childbirth ed. series, La Leche meetings, work with a mentor, co-teach and do volunteer work prior to certification. For more information about the program...

Client review of Ruby

My name is Marca Hughes.  I live in Wisconsin.  Ruby was my doula.  I had a perfect labor and delivery and am so glad Ruby was there to support me through it.

Would you recommend Ruby?
Yes, a thousand times over.

Was she easy to work with, easy to communicate with, and receptive to answering
questions in the period before the birth?

Yes, she was very good at meeting with us to draft the birth plan and east to be open with. There is nothing you can't say to Ruby.

Was Ruby helpful and supportive during labor?
To say the least! I labored for 36 hours at home and she stayed with us and relieved my husband so he could sleep while I breathed through my contractions. She made me delicious, healing foods like soup and meals before and after labor and delivery.  She was great at offering suggestions but also ok with me delclining many of them. She was also very adaptive at meeting my sometimes very specific requests.

How did she involve herself, andwas it what you were expecting?
She has a doula bag full of wonderful things for laboring mamas. She was always ready to support me, beit with a sense of humor, ice pack, breathwork, supportive comments, enthusiasm, fath, etc. and

Were there any good (or bad) surprises?
My husband didn't want to cut the cord so Ruby did. And, she convinced me to save my placenta and I told her if I took it home, that she had to deal with it. In the spring she planted a tree in my yard and burried Daphne's placenta under it so she always knew where home was.

Was Ruby open to and accepting of your decisions before and during labor?  Did
she guide you in a way that made you feel like you were in control of the
situation?
She was terrific at staying on track with my birth plan and advocating for me. She really spent the time to understand my wishes and made sure we tried our hardest to get there.

Have you had a birth experience aside from the one Ruby assisted you with?
No. She was my first.

Were there any drawbacks to working with Ruby?  (For example, with my last
doula, she had lots of problems with her email, so we had some difficulty
communicating at times during the months beforehand – a minor detail,
admittedly….)
She is a committed, devoted doula. I believe everyone has at least one gift of something they were meant to do because they are great at it and passionate about it.  This is how Ruby is with being a doula. She was born to do it! No pun intended.

Good luck with your decision and your birth.

Best,
Marca Hughes

Doula Training and Certification

I became a doula in 2006 when my sister became pregnant with her daughter, Daphne.  I had wanted to do birth work since college and this was a great reason to get myself into training.

I trained at the Chapman Family Center in Santa Monica, CA.

I am DONA certified and review packets for their certification committee.
